<P><B>Plainsboro, New Jersey</B> -- Scientists at the U.S. Department of =

Energy's (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) report a major =
advance=20
in the computer modeling of fusion plasmas in the September 18 edition =
of=20
<I>Science</I>. The new results were obtained utilizing the Massively =
Parallel=20
Processing (MPP) capabilities of the DOE's National Energy Research =
Scientific=20
Computing Center (NERSC) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory =
(LBNL) in=20
Berkeley, California. </P>
<P>In general, the formation of stars results from the dynamic behavior =
of hot=20
ionized gases known as plasmas. Fusion researchers use magnetic fields =
to=20
confine such hot gaseous fuel at the temperature, density, and duration =
required=20
for the controlled production of significant amounts of fusion energy. =
However,=20
turbulence can spoil the efficiency of this approach by causing =
accelerated loss=20
of particles and energy from the plasma. As pointed out in a =
Perspectives=20
article in the same issue of <I>Science</I>, good news from toroidal =
confinement=20
experiments indicates that the suppression of turbulence can enable =
transitions=20
to newly discovered enhanced confinement regimes. </P>
<P>In the work reported in <I>Science</I> this week, PPPL scientists =
have used=20
the full power of the SGI/Cray T3E supercomputer at NERSC to create=20
three-dimensional nonlinear particle simulations of microturbulence in =
the=20
plasma. The use of NERSC's massively parallel processor (MPP) =
capabilities=20
enabled scientists to perform calculations involving 400 million plasma=20
particles (i.e., 100 million guiding centers) in 5,000 time-steps -- an=20
achievement impossible without the use of powerful MPP computers. </P>
<P>"The information obtained from these advanced computer simulations is =

providing valuable new physics insights and correlates well with trends =
observed=20
in experiments. This work builds on the excellent knowledge base =
developed=20
internationally and complements related research efforts at other =
national=20
laboratories such as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and General =
Atomics=20
[both in California], as well as at universities such as UCLA and the =

unclassified supercomputing centers, provides both computational =
